A Glance at DraftKings 3rd Major of the 2015 PGA Tour Season

The third major of the 2015 PGA tour season is approaching as the Open Championship gets underway on Thursday opening up a chance to take home a million dollars on DraftKings. Yes you read that million dollars correctly as DraftKings will be awarding the top prize in their $3 million millionair maker, one million dollars.

This allows us a few days to start prepping for this third major as all eyes will be on the 21 year old Jordan Spieth. Spieth who picked up his fourth win of the season in a playoff on Sunday became the first player since Tiger Woods to accomplish that feat before the Open Championship. Overall Spieth has played in 18 total tournaments this season taking home the title in four to go along with three second place finishes, one third place finish and 11 total top 10 appearances.

Spieth who is the only real favorite entering as Rory McIlroy will miss the even after tearing up his ankle play soccer last week. Currently Spieth is a 9/2 favorite according to Bovada while the runner up favorite is Dustin Johnson. Johnson is a 12/1 favorite entering the Open Championship after finishing tied for second at the US Open back in June.

Other notable odds to take into consideration for the 2015 Open Championship are:

Rickie Fowler – 16/1

Tiger Woods – 20/1

Phil Mickelson – 33/1

Bubba Watson – 33/1

Adam Scott – 22/1

While we love looking at the odds, the end lineup we do not build simply based around these as we like to take a look at a few different areas. One example is the fact that Spieth is the favorite entering but has a few key pieces playing against his chances. One of those is the fact that he played in a tournament this past weekend slowing down his arrival time. That being said, Spieth will need a few days to get past the jet lag that could slow him down on Thursday. Second thing to consider is the fact he is going for a grand slam in the same season something that hasn’t been accomplished in the Masters ERA.

After looking at this we also look at who has played well over the past few years over in England. One name that stands out is Adam Scott who has finished near the top in each of the past three. Last season Scott finished tied at fifth with a twelve under, tied for third the year prior to that at one over and finished second at six under two seasons ago.

The final part that we look at is the total salary that each player costs for the tournament. For example, Jordan Spieth will cost you $12,000 while Adam Scott costs you $10,700. The move to go with Scott would save you some salary to open up the door. We also look at which players might be a bargain to allow us to free up additional salary to take multiple top tier golfers.

One player we like to fit this bill is Kevin Na who enters ranked 27th in the FedEX Cup standings. Na enters the tournament landing at only a $6,800 salary saving you some cap space. This season, Na has appeared in 20 tournaments taking home one second place finish as well as a total six top tens. Na has also made the cut in 17 of those events missing the cut twice and withdrawing from another event.
