NBA Offseason Happenings

The 2014 NBA offseason has definitely been filled with plenty of action that could affect your fantasy basketball drafts or teams this coming season. There have been injuries, free agent signings, trades, rookies finding their roles with their new teams and above all else, drama.

While there is no lack of drama in the NBA, or professional sports for that matter, the winner in this offseason has to be Donald Sterling. All the legal drama that has followed Sterling’s racial comments has left the Los Angeles Clippers’ ownership in a very bad state. While this may not seem like a big deal to most fantasy players, keep in mind that the legal situation involving the Clippers is a very serious one. It may not stop anyone from drafting Blake Griffin or Chris Paul as stars to lead their teams, but it should be enough to make someone think twice.

Of course the biggest move this offseason in the NBA was made by none other than LeBron James with his decision to return to his hometown and sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers. LeBron is considered the best player in the game today and thanks to that, his decision affected the value of several others more than himself actually. After the Cavs signed LeBron, they then traded away rookie Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett to the Minnesota Timberwolves to bring in Kevin Love. Love and LeBron now join Kyrie Irving in Cleveland to form a new feared threesome in the league while Wiggins looks to become the new focal point of the Timberwolves.

The Indiana Pacers suffered probably the biggest loss to their team this offseason when their star player Paul George went down with a broken leg that can only be described as gruesome to watch. If you were looking to have George help lead your team this season, now would be the time to start rethinking your strategy.

A few other key moves during the NBA offseason would be the Toronto Raptors resigning Kyle Lowry, keeping him from bigger teams such as the Laker and Knicks. His value for the upcoming season should stay pretty high while helping his fellow teammates in Toronto. Paul Pierce left the Brooklyn Nets and signed with the Washington Wizards, a move that could potentially hurt his value. Also, the duo of Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol has finally come to an end. Gasol signed with the Chicago Bulls as a free agent, leaving the Lakers as Kobe’s team. If he can stay healthy, Kobe could put up some big numbers to help your fantasy team this season.

There you have some of the happenings from around the NBA during this offseason. Hopefully it will help give a little insight when deciding on which players to take during your draft.
